Game Debuts

Real Racing 3 – (Freemium)

Leading the huge pack of new arrivals into the App Store today is EA’s Real Racing 3, the latest sequel in the on-going “hyper-realistic” driving series. This one adopts a new freemium pricing model, and it works wonderfully – but you don’t have to take my word for it. Justin’s already written a full review of the game that you can read right here. Or, if you’d prefer, there’s also a video version just below:

AVP: Evolution – ($0.99)

Don’t look now, Aliens fans – another video game adapting the franchise has just arrived, hot on the heels of the incredibly controversial Colonial Marines. It can’t be any worse than that one, right?

Toy Story: Smash It! – ($0.99)

Disney’s latest app is here, and this time it’s the Toy Story crew of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex and all the rest of Andy’s toys brought together to topple blocks set up on the floor of Andy’s bedroom. Not a bad window-dressing for a physics puzzler.

Penumbear – ($1.99)

This unique puzzle/platformer takes a new spin on the light-manipulating mechanics other games have explored in the past – your character can walk on the edges of columns of light, tip-toeing his way to the end of each level, always just on the verge of stepping into the shadows.

1001 Attempts – ($0.99)

An old-school scorechaser with a retro aesthetic and a modern appreciation of odd humor, 1001 Attempts will challenge you to try to beat your last play just one more time. Then one more time again. Then just one more …

Up in Flames – ($0.99)

The physics puzzling of Chillingo’s latest looks a bit like Angry Birds, only with a dragon spewing fireballs instead of a slingshot hurling birds.

iStriker 2: Air Assault – ($0.99)

A new vertical-scrolling 3D shooter for all you shmup fans out there.

Cognition: Episode 1 – ($3.99)

Erica Reed is an F.B.I. agent with a unique ability – she can see into the past. You’ll have to use her skill of mental time travel to solve the mysteries in the first episode of a new point-and-click adventure series.

PokerTower – ($0.99)

Build the best poker hands possible in this match-three-esque puzzler that kind of looks like it’s being played on a Texas Instruments calculator screen.

Crazy Bill – ($0.99)

The App Store’s latest zombie game takes the next logical step for the undead – zombie celebrities! Why mow down more nameless, boring zombies when you can fight Zombie Einstein, Zombie Leonard Nimoy and Zombie Elvis instead?

King Cashing 2 – ($2.99)

And then, for more zombies, check out the slot-machine adventures of the undead King Cashing.

Star Hound – ($0.99)

The Kieffer brothers’ latest design puts you in charge of an auto-running dog with access to a jetpack and Spider-Man’s web-slinging abilities.

Gravity.Duck – ($0.99)

Last but certainly not least, the makers of League of Evil, Burger Cat, Burrito Bison and Beatdown are back with another great-looking game – this one about a duck who gains the power to manipulate gravity. Take a look:

Freebies!

Kid Vector – (Free)

David Byers, the one-man team at developer Uncade has kicked off a Kickstarter project for his new game, Another Castle – and he’s hoping this free giveaway of one of his previous designs helps raise the profile of that campaign.

Shadow Snake HD – (Free)

Trace a path across the screen to direct the movements of a shadowy serpent:

Updates

Puzzle Craft – (Freemium)

Chillingo and Ars Thanea Games released Puzzle Craft back in August to significant critical acclaim. IGN awarded the game a 9 / 10 Editor's Choice award and later on named it the #21 best game ever released on the App Store. And yet post-launch there's been... nothing. No new puzzle minigames, no new buildings or workers... no updates of any kind outside of a few bugfixes.

Until today, that is. Puzzle Craft has finally been updated to version 1.1 with new Treasure Hunt features, bringing a bevy of new content to the game. The bulk of the patch revolves around discovering and collecting a variety of treasures when mining or farming. New buildings, like a museum for displaying your treasure collection, help flesh out the new feature. More workers, tools and achievements also help players flesh out their treasure collection. Lastly, the level cap has been raised to level 60.

True Skate – ($1.99)

A new skate park is available as an in-app purchase and you can customize the art on your board thanks to True Skate’s new update.

Bad Piggies – ($0.99)

Today, Bad Piggies developer Rovio released the first update for the physics puzzler since October, and only the second update since the game launched. To make up for the lack of new levels, Rovio packed today's patch with much more new content than usual.

First up, players have 30 brand-new 'Flight in the Night' stages to puzzle their way through. To succeed, gamers have to sneakily pass by sets of sleeping angry birds without waking them up. The update also adds six new leaderboard-centric Road Hog stages. At their core, these levels are just like other Bad Piggies stages - assemble your vehicle and get it to the finish line as quickly as possible. But these time trial challenges pit you against your friends as well as the clock, with leaderboards tracking who manages to complete the stages the fastest.

Finally, gamers that master the new Flight in the Night stages will unlock a new open-ended sandbox stage to truly test their creativity and ingenuity. For any gamers stuck on the new content, fear not. IGN is hard at work on three-star video guides for all the new levels. Look for it on IGN.com and IGNGameplay on YouTube soon.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour – ($6.99)

The first update for MC4 has now gone live, readjusting the balance in multiplayer and adding two new weapons – the Tygr X3 Automatic SMG and the Compakt-665 Automatic Assault Rifle.

That’s it for today! Email subscriptions to the App Store Update are still just one sign-up away, right here:
