Big phones? Tablets with phone capabilities? Heaven forbid,"phablets"? Whatever you call them, hybrid mobile technologies are quickly becoming stars of Mobile World Congress, especially now as ASUS debuted its FonePad in Barcelona. The company's 7-inch tablet doubles as a fully functioning 3G phone — not too much different in purpose from fellow Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0.
Sizing up with a 7-inch, 1280 by 800 pixel display, the FonePad weighs a little more than half a pound — pretty standard for a tablet but doubling the weight of even larger Android phones such as the Galaxy S III. It sports an Intel 1.2GHz Atom Z2420 processor, with 1GB of RAM and PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The Android 4.1 JellyBean OS will be able to make incoming and outgoing calls, supported by an HSPA+ radio and 3G mobile data.
The tablet comes with up to 16GB of storage, but it can be augmented with a microSD slot that, thankfully, supports up to 32GB of extra memory. The tablet also features a standard 1.2-megapixel camera that will come in handy for video calls, but the rear-facing 3-megapixel autofocus camera is optional.
The confirmed price for the FonePad will start at €219 ($249) and debut in Europe this March, but there's no word on release in the US. What do you think of the FonePad's does-it-all design? Let us know in the comments.
