Young Avengers #2 Review

Young Avengers has already developed its own unique set of quirks. Some are good, others not so much. It always makes sure to create a fun visual playground for your eyeballs. The plot is delivered with a different kind of dialogue that runs smooth until it hits odd momentum gaps. And the end of the book has a wild, unforeseeable curveball that leaves you one part awed and two parts confused. Young Avengers feels like listening to a flippin’ sweet old album you found in your uncle’s garage, but the record keeps skipping.

Wiccan and Hulkling carry the book admirably, but it does leave you pining for more of that invigorating Miss America Chavez from issue #1. The villainous Mom-Monster from last issue’s curveball makes for a conflict so complexing that the characters seem to understand it as little as the reader, leaving the best moments to be the personal bits that don’t directly address the plot.

The stars of the book are undoubtedly the art team. Artists Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton along with colorist Matthew Wilson nail every page with the magic wands they must be using to make paper and ink look this good. The standout pages that will have everyone talking involve Wiccan and Hulkling being sent to their “new room” and are guaranteed to make you smile just as broadly as the creative team must have while constructing the pages.

It’s easy to love this book for moments like the personal connection between the boyfriends and the way Loki makes fun of Wiccan’s superhero name, but instances like the massive leap of unexplained logic at the end of the diner scene throw it off beat. This book is just a few practice jam sessions from being as amazing as it strives to be.
