Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #1 Review

Talk about nailing first issue, IDW! Holy cow this is good stuff. Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror does just about everything right; it's exciting, fun, big, and just the a little bit ridiculous. It hits all the beats of a perfect Rocketeer story and is easily accessible for newcomers. Never read the Rocketeer before? No problem, you can -- and should -- jump right in here and enjoy the high-flying adventures of one of comics' greatest characters.

Roger Langridge is somebody comic fans are hopefully familiar with. From his brilliant work on Thor: The Mighty Avenger to the hilarious Muppet Show, Langridge has shown he's a topnotch creator who knows how to make a book entertaining. Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror captures that old school pulpy magic and adds a dash of Lovecraftian horror for good measure and the results are spectacular. One of the best things about the Rocketeer is that the character has no continuity, no canon. Anything goes and Langridge truly embraces that here.

J. Bone does some fantastic cartooning in this issue, delivering a classic, borderline-newspaper-strip feel that reads wonderfully. His version of Betty is among my all-time favorites, as he really shows off her sexiness, spunk, and fiery personality. Jordie Bellaire colors this issue like a dream, adding a rich layer of hues and tones that bring the page to life. The only real hiccup here is the lettering, which does some funky stuff through out the issue, like switching fonts mid-sentence when a simple bolding would do the trick. It's a small blemish on an otherwise brilliant issue.

"Come in Space Station Alpha! Do you read me, damn it?!" Benjamin switched the turbo thrusters into overdrive. He had to beat the Omnix fleet to Earth. Follow Benjamin on Twitter @616Earth, or find him on IGN.
