Uncanny Avengers #4 Review

When the Marvel NOW! books were being announced, the title I was hands down the most excited for was Uncanny Avengers. Two of my favorite creators handling some great characters in a new and interesting team dynamic? Sign me up! Sadly, the last couple of issues have been oddly paced with some incredibly clunky narration. There's still lots to love in this series, but you'll have to wade through some really strange storytelling choices to find it. It's a bummer, because I really don't think my hopes could have been any higher.

Without a doubt, the weakest part of Uncanny Avengers #4 is the narration that runs through out the issue. A faceless, emotionless narrator tells us what is happening on every page, in nearly every panel. More than half of the time it is completely pointless, as if Rick Remender just kept writing while he was waiting for the notoriously slow John Cassaday to finish pages. It's downright bizarre and adds almost nothing to the story or the characters. In fact, you can skip over lots of it and still enjoy the issue. You know what? Do that. You'll probably like this more if you just skip the narration.

As previously stated, there is still lots of good stuff going here. Cassaday's art was worth the wait, as this issue looks absolutely fantastic. Laura Martin's colors are as strong as ever, so if nothing else Uncanny Avengers #4 is a visually very pleasing comic book. There's a great page that apes the classic Days of Future Past cover that is worth the cover price alone. And say what you will about Remender's writing in this issue, those last two pages are a thing of beauty. Uncanny Avengers is an okay series that needs to find its voice and then scale back on it. Show, not tell!.
